Keratin Treatment Do's and Don'ts

by Anjelina Tongco

People with frizzy, unruly, or wavy hair often dream of having smooth, silky straight hair. Thankfully, that’s not impossible and there are tons of hair treatments available to help you achieve that goal. One of the best and most highly recommended ones is keratin treatment

This hair treatment locks moisture in your hair, leaving it soft and smooth. Getting a keratin treatment is not cheap, so it’s important to do your research first before going to the salon so you can have the best results. Here are some keratin treatment do’s and don’ts to help you make the results last longer.

Do's:

  1. Do wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo: Before getting a keratin treatment, it's important to wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup of products or oils. This will help the treatment to penetrate your hair more effectively.
  2. Do let your stylist know about any previous chemical treatments: Inform your stylist if you have recently had any chemical treatments, such as coloring or relaxing, as this can affect the outcome of your keratin treatment.
  3. Do use a sulfate-free shampoo after the treatment: After getting a keratin treatment, use a sulfate-free shampoo to maintain the longevity of the treatment. Sulfates can strip the keratin from your hair, making it more susceptible to damage.
  4. Do use a wide-tooth comb: When detangling your hair after a keratin treatment, use a wide-tooth comb to avoid pulling or tugging on your hair. This will help prevent breakage and keep your hair looking smooth and healthy.
  5. Do use a heat protectant: When using heat tools like a flat iron or blow dryer, be sure to use a heat protectant to prevent damage to your hair. This is especially important after a keratin treatment, as your hair may be more prone to damage.

Don'ts:

  1. Don't wash your hair immediately: After getting a keratin treatment, it's important to wait at least 48 hours before washing your hair. This allows the treatment to set and ensures that you get the best possible results.
  2. Don't tie your hair up: Avoid tying your hair up in a ponytail or bun for at least 48 hours after your keratin treatment. This can leave creases in your hair and affect the overall smoothness of your style. Imagine all that time and money go to waste! Sad isn’t it?
  3. Don't use hair products with alcohol: Products that contain alcohol can dry out your hair and strip the hair keratin from your strands. Avoid using products with alcohol for at least 48 hours after your keratin treatment.
  4. Don’t get your hair treated for another six months: Rebonding, bleaching, and other chemical hair treatments can ruin your hair if done after a keratin treatment so let at least six months pass before getting anything else done to your locks.
  5. Don't swim or sweat excessively: After getting a keratin treatment, it's important to avoid excessive sweating or swimming for at least 48 hours. This will allow the treatment to set and ensure that you get the best possible results.
  6. Don't use a high-heat setting on your heat tools: Avoid using a high-heat setting on your flat iron or blow dryer after getting a keratin treatment. This can damage your hair and cause the treatment to wear off more quickly.

By following these do's and don'ts, you can ensure that you get the best possible results from your keratin treatment and keep your hair looking smooth and healthy.
