Itchy Scalp? Here’s How To Deal With It

by Anjelina Tongco

An itchy scalp may be an indicator of dandruff, but that’s not the only thing that you need to watch out for when you are tempted to start scratching your scalp. There are several things that could make your scalp itch and each one requires a different approach and a different solution. If you’re suffering from an itchy scalp, here’s how you can deal with it.

  1. Dandruff - dandruff is often caused by a fungus called Malassezia which is yeast-like in nature and feeds on the oil from your scalp. In order to totally get rid of dandruff, you might need to consult with a professional and get prescribed some medicated hair care products like medicated dandruff shampoo and conditioner.
  2. Oily scalp - another thing that might be causing your scalp to itch is too much oil. If you notice yourself starting to develop greasy hair and an itchy scalp, you might not be washing your hair often enough or well enough. Residual product (aka hair product that hasn’t been rinsed out) can cause greasy hair and itchiness too so do one wash with clarifying shampoo and see if the itching goes away.
  3. Dry scalp - if your scalp is too dry, it may start to itch, too. Most of the time, this happens around winter when the temps start to drop and the cool air sucks the moisture out of your skin, scalp included. If this is the case for you, you might want to try introducing more hydrating products to your hair care routine like a hair mask, deep conditioner, or even hair oils
  4. Lice - this one’s a bit challenging, but definitely something you can overcome nonetheless. The best way to treat lice and get rid of the itch that comes with it is to seek the help of a professional at a lice control clinic. Of course, you also have the option to do it at home but it’s going to be a tedious and taxing task that you might have to spend a whole day on.
  5. Allergies - last on our list is allergies. Eating or getting in contact with something that you’re allergic to may manifest rashes on your body at first, but the rash can reach your scalp and make it itch, too. Using a hair product with ingredients that you’re allergic to can cause itching on your scalp too.

Before you start experimenting with different products and home remedies for your itchy scalp, make sure you know what’s causing it first. This can save you from a lot of trouble and it can keep you from spending money on unnecessary stuff, too!
